Who are we?SAEFTY Ottawa (Support And Education For Trans Youth Ottawa) is an independent organization created and run by and for trans and gender diverse youth. We aim to bridge the gap between trans and gender diverse people of all ages, by giving them the chance to connect in a space that is free from transphobia, homophobia, heterosexism, sexism, racism, ableism, islamophobia, colonialism, and other forms of oppression. Though our schedule may vary, on a typical month, we host a drop-in space on the first Saturday and a special event on the third Saturday. Some events may intentionally centre on youth who are younger (eg. elementary school aged) or older (eg. high school aged and beyond), but all events are open to trans people of all ages. As a community organization, SAEFTY is committed to providing a safer space for all trans and gender diverse youth where they can meet and connect with each other in a non-medical environment. We aim to provide positive and relatable role models to trans kids and youth in a supportive space where they can be themselves.
We aim to be inclusive, combat transphobia and to create a space that is free from transphobia, homophobia, heterosexism, sexism, racism, ableism, islamophobia, and colonialism. We pride ourselves on being run entirely by and for our community and are removing ourselves from the medical model that trans youth are often faced with. We believe that trans youth should have access to environments where they are not under the scrutiny of medical or social service professionals and support the autonomy of trans kids and youth to make decisions about their own bodies and lives.
